KEY INITIATIVES

Founded and led impactful organizations addressing critical social issues

Not In My Name International

Founded in 2017 in response to escalating gender-based violence in South Africa, this movement is dedicated to addressing gender inequality through advocacy, education, and support programs.

The initiative focuses on supporting victims of gender violence while also rehabilitating and educating men and boys to foster positive and non-violent forms of masculinity.

Missing X Institute

Founded after research at the University of Pretoria's Gordon Institute of Business Sciences revealed a troubling decline in electoral participation among young South Africans since 1994.

This initiative aims to enhance civic and political engagement through research, advocacy, and capacity-building, while also providing consulting services and facilitating community engagement programs.

CASE STUDY

Impact assessment of advocacy initiatives

Not In My Name Campaign

The Not In My Name campaign was launched in 2017 as a direct response to the alarming rise in gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa. What began as a local protest movement quickly evolved into an international advocacy platform.

Challenge

South Africa has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence globally, with limited public awareness and insufficient government response. The challenge was to create a movement that would both support victims and drive systemic change.

Approach

The campaign employed a multi-faceted approach:

  • Public demonstrations and marches to raise awareness
  • Educational workshops in schools and communities
  • Rehabilitation programs for perpetrators
  • Advocacy for policy reform at government level
  • Support networks for survivors of violence

Results

The campaign has achieved significant impact over its years of operation:

  • Reached thousands of people through direct engagement
  • Established support networks in 15 communities across South Africa
  • Contributed to the development of the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence
  • Secured partnerships with international organizations.
  • Received recognition from the United Nations for innovative advocacy

Recognition

The campaign's success led to multiple recognitions, including the UN SDG Solidarity Action Award in 2020, acknowledging its contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality.

"The Not In My Name campaign represents one of the most effective grassroots movements addressing gender-based violence in Africa. Its community-centered approach has created sustainable impact."
